UPDATE [May 11th 2021]: Over 140+ participating businesses raised approximately $40,000 for local AAPI nonprofits on April 17th! Thanks to everyone who made it possible.
In light of the horrifying increase in anti-Asian racism and violent attacks against Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders across the country, Almanac Beer Company is launching a Day Of Action on April 17th to unite the Bay Area business community in denouncing anti-Asian racism and to raise funds for local nonprofits that support our AAPI communities.
Over the past year, Stop AAPI Hate has received nearly 3,800 reports of anti-Asian hate incidents, with 45% of those incidents occurring in California. 40% of U.S. adults believe "it has become more common for people to express racist views toward Asians since the pandemic began (Source: Pew Research)”. This simply cannot go on.
“Almanac stands for acceptance or we stand for nothing at all. We love, stand with, and embrace our Asian American & Pacific Islander friends, family, team members, and community. In light of the surge in anti-Asian racism, and in acknowledgment of generation upon generation of AAPI oppression in this country, we pledge to be an active voice against this unacceptable hatred, and strive to be a positive force for sustainable change in our local Bay Area community and beyond. We have zero tolerance for bigotry. Everyone is welcome at Almanac. April 17th is just one step, but we hope by uniting with other businesses across the area, we can amplify our collective impact.”
- Damian Fagan, Founder & CEO of Almanac Beer Company
All businesses are encouraged to take the pledge and commit to a solidarity action on April 17th. Suggested actions are: Donating a portion of profits from the day to a nonprofit; hosting relevant anti-racism trainings for team members; matching donations; and/or hosting a pop-up or otherwise promoting an AAPI owned-business.
